The West Coast is big on “total dining experience.” Surely we all agree that there is more to dining than food. A restaurant may offer a romantic atmosphere, a waterfront vista, or even a singing waiter. I saw a guidebook for San Francisco where restaurants were grouped by cuisine, with one category being gay. Somehow, however, California fails to represent a certain type of ambiance that’s common in New York, the East Coast diner style. We are talking real food for real people.

I am reminded of East-Coast-diner-style every winter when business brings me to upstate New York. Binghamton has a half dozen establishments that embody the old-time ambiance. Breakfast at these places is a very safe bet, but American breakfasts are fairly uniform. The real style is shown off at lunch.

We are at The Spot in Binghamton. There is a somewhat-famous The Spot in Santa Monica that serves up vegetarian hamburgers. Trust me, there is no relationship of that one to the one in Binghamton. I’ll guide you through the meal here.

Lunch includes soup, and you can count of good split pea or lentil soup. Why isn’t split pea soup served everywhere? It’s one of life’s mysteries.

Among the six or eight lunch specials I selected meatloaf with mushroom sauce. The sauce is mushroom gravy. The plate is a study in brown, no doubt a reflection of the mid-winter landscape. No sprig of parsley spoils the mood.

The sauce was nicely mushroomy, but the meatloaf a bit bland. It’s role is to fill you up on winter day, and it does that.

My wife opted for the colorful, frighteningly colorful by comparison, corned beef special. In keeping with tradition, much of the favor is boiled into the stock, which is then discarded.

I’m not sure why, but placemat advertising is an essential element of the total East Coast diner experience.

The placemat helps you locate critical goods and services: feed and tack, guns and ammo, computer repair, and septic tank pumping. There’s a whole lifestyle on that placemat. California restaurants lack such pertinent information.

Finally there is pie. The pie is always good.

Lunch is a bargain. No theater, no pretense, just food and some nostalgia.
